TRANSPORT TICKETS FROM THE MALTESE ISLANDS - MALTA RAILWAY - 1883 to 1931

The Malta Railway opened on 28th February 1883. The line ran from Valletta to Notabile with stations and halts at Floriana, Hamrun, Msida, Birkirkara, Attard and San Salvatore. The railway had serious financial problems and on 1st April 1890 the railway stopped running. The Government took over the railway, invested in its infrastructure and reopened to traffic on 25 January 1892. The railway was later extended from Notabile Station through a tunnel under Mdina to the Museum Station near Mtarfa, opening in 1900. Due to increased competition from the Malta Tramway which opened in 1905 and closed in 1929 and the buses which commenced operating in 1905, the Malta Railway sadly closed down on 31st March 1931.
