Tribute to Kennedy's Sausages (and Pies) by Alan Edwards
As featuring my good self on the ITN

The first Kennedy's shop opened at 140 Rye Lane, Peckham in 1877, then over the years many more branches were opened, including the following (listed alphabetically) BECKENHAM, BRIXTON, BROMLEY (2 branches), CAMBERWELL GREEN, CATFORD, CROYDON, DEPTFORD, FOREST HILL, HERNE HILL, LEWISHAM, NEW CROSS GATE, ORPINGTON, PECKHAM (2 branches) PENGE, STREATHAM, SOUTH NORWOOD (Grade ll listed), WALWORTH ROAD (Grade ll listed), WEST WICKHAM and WOOLWICH. In later years the Head Office and Factory was situated at 86 Peckham Road, Peckham. The following items were sold in their shops around South London, PORK SAUSAGES and CHIPOLATAS, BEEF SAUSAGES, PORK & BEEF SAUSAGES, CAMBRIDGE SAUSAGES, PORK PIES, PORK BACON & EGG PIES, STEAK PIES, STEAK & POTATO PIES, SAUSAGE ROLLS, SAVALOYS, CORNISH PASTIES, PUFF & SHORT PASTRY, FRUIT PIES, CHRISTMAS PUDDINGS also BACON, COOKED MEATS, CHEESE, COLESLAW etc', Sadly the last 8 branches at Bromley South, Camberwell Green, Croydon, Deptford, Penge, South Norwood, Walworth Road, West Wickham and the Factory and HQ at Peckham closed on 22nd December 2007. My personal interest in Kennedy's came about when the closure notices appeared. As my first job when I left school in 1958 was on the provisions counter at the Home & Colonial Stores in Guildford, I could associate very well with the atmosphere of the Kennedy's shops. I felt that I must record as much as I could by taking photos of the remaining shops and to gather as much information as possible in the short time before the final sad closure on 22nd December 2007, then following on through 2008 and beyond, tracking down locations of previous Kennedy's premises.
